I am the president of the Epicerie Sequentielle, an association of comic strip authors in Lyon. I am myself an author and a comic book teacher.

This association was originally created to allow authors from Lyon to meet, exchange and collaborate. We then made it evolve towards a structure of collective and participative self-publishing.

Since 2015, we have been publishing a newspaper that offers a complete 12-page comic strip story every month

Since 2015, we have been publishing a newspaper that offers a complete 12-page comic strip story every month, on an anecdote, an event, a personality from Lyon's history. These comics are distributed in about fifty sales outlets in the city, online on our website, and to more than 850 subscribers.

It's local and fair trade comics. Each issue is sold for 3€ and out of this amount, 1€ goes to the bookseller, 1€ goes to the association, 1€ goes to the author. Knowing that in the classic edition, it is generally 10% of the price of the book that goes to the author, it is a little more remunerative.

Making a living as a comic book author is becoming increasingly difficult. More than 5,000 titles are published every year, the number of active authors is also increasing. So it becomes very difficult to make a place in the sun.

It has become necessary to build new ways of doing our job. The bookstores are full of fiction books, we decided to do history. Bookstores are also full of albums whose prices rarely start below 10 or 11€, it has become expensive for many readers.

We decided to launch a collection of popular comics accessible to all. The press is falling apart, but the regional press seems to be faring better (for now). That means readers want to know a little more about the area they live in. We decided to reconnect the people of Lyon with their history, and it works.

We work in collaboration with museums, archives, art schools, ...

This type of publication has never existed. It is completely new. We don't try to turn readers into experts of Lyon's history, we give them everything they need to know, to be aware of it, to be able to tell these anecdotes around them.

Each month, it's a different author or authors, a different story. It's an appointment that our subscribers are looking forward to. We have edited boxed sets per year to allow buyers to collect our publications. We work in collaboration with museums, archives, art schools, festivals, research centers, history buffs, and booksellers.

Our readers know they can easily meet us. Booksellers know that they can organize book signings at a lower cost... It is this proximity that also makes the difference.
