Which product type should I pick?
This choice is permanent. Understand the 4 PayFacile product types: subscription, digital, physical, and service. How to decide.
This choice is permanent — here’s how to decide
This is the first question every new user asks, and the most important one: the product type cannot be changed after creation. It determines the underlying data structure (billing frequency, stock management, shipping).
⚠️ Important: if you pick the wrong type, you’ll need to create a new product and set the old one to offline. Take 30 seconds to read this through.
Simple rule:
- Customer pays every month/year? → Subscription
- Customer downloads something? → Digital product
- You ship an item? → Physical product
- It’s a one-time engagement? → Service
Subscription: automated recurring revenue
Subscriptions are the go-to product type for generating predictable revenue. You set a billing frequency (monthly, annual, weekly, or custom cycle) and PayFacile handles everything automatically: charges, invoices, and retries on failed payments.
Available options:
- Free trial period (in days)
- Setup fees (one-time charge at start)
- Fixed commitment duration or open-ended subscription
Best for: online courses, SaaS software, monthly boxes, premium content access, recurring coaching.
Digital product: one-time sale with instant delivery
A digital product is a one-time sale. The customer pays once and gets immediate access to their purchase.
Best for: ebooks, templates, music, downloadable courses, PDF files, photo presets.
Physical product: stock management and shipping
The physical product type enables stock management and shipping fields. The customer pays once. You can track available quantities and manage delivery tracking from the order details page.
Best for: handmade products, merchandise, printed books, equipment.
Service: selling one-time services
The Service type is designed for one-time engagements. Single payment, no stock or shipping involved. The customer pays and you receive an order notification.
Best for: consultations, audits, one-off coaching, custom work, technical services.
